Frequently asked questions
Is GuguEye a medical diagnostic tool?
No. GuguEye is for preliminary, at-home vision screening only. It does not diagnose vision conditions and is not a substitute for an eye examination by a qualified professional. Results can be affected by lighting, screen calibration, viewing distance, and a child's cooperation. If you have concerns, consult an eye-care professional.
Do I need an account or an internet connection?
No account and no sign-in are required, and the core screening works entirely offline. iCloud sync is optional and, when enabled, syncs data to your own private iCloud database.
Where are my screening records stored?
By default they are stored locally on the device and can be viewed in History. When iCloud sync is enabled, they sync across devices signed in to the same Apple ID. Turning sync off does not delete records already on the device.
Why are some distances unavailable, or why does a result mention a measurable ceiling?
GuguEye calculates whether an optotype can be rendered faithfully at its standard physical size from the entered screen size, viewing distance, and the TV's actual output resolution. When a target would be too small to render accurately, the app disables that distance or reports a measurable ceiling instead of inflating the result.
How do I run a screening?
On the Start screen, a parent enters the TV size and viewing distance. Follow the on-screen guidance to cover one eye, have the child use the Siri Remote directional buttons to indicate the gap direction of the E or Landolt C optotype, repeat for the other eye, then review the results and recommendations.
Which languages are supported?
Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean. You can follow the system language or choose one manually in Settings.
